Mr. Pullman, was sexual violence against a girl really the best way to move your story along? I am disappointed with this choice.

Otherwise, it was an enjoyable story.

What a fantastic journey back into the fantastical world of Dust and Lyra and alethiometer!

That was well worth the wait and I'm so happy to be back and reading new stories about Lyra's world. This first volume of a new trilogy takes place 11 years before The Golden Compass, Lyra is a baby and our hero is 11 year old Malcolm. Malcolm leads an unassuming life working with his parents at the local pub until he becomes acquainted with baby Lyra, a spy, and the danger associated with that knowledge. Malcolm, another girl named Alice, and their daemons end up journeying with Lyra in the titular canoe after a flood and their journey and quest for sanctuary for Lyra is truly harrowing for kids their age and in the world that is happening around them. Some more adult material is included here but it still feels on par with the old child/early teen group of readers. I hope Lyra gets to hear this story in the next books, it is quite the tale and technically her first adventure.

Suffice to say if you enjoyed His Dark Materials, you'll enjoy this too.

while this is categorized as YA, the author doesn't condescend or dumb down the vocabulary. if a reader doesn't fully understand some of the events that occur it doesn't take away from the overall enjoyment of the story (and it's probably just as well.)
this book returns to the richly imagined, fully realized world of the Dark Materials. it doesn't count as a prequel for me because i've read hundreds of books in the interim and only remember some of the details.
it's very tempting to revisit the original trilogy and remember the sense of wonder of this alternate universe.

A welcome return to the world of His Dark Materials. I'm not sure how I felt about the more supernatural elements of the second half of the book, but on the whole immersive and thrilling.

I love Philip Pullman. I truly enjoyed this book. How Lyra ended up living at the university, and why her parents behaved the way they did! Hope we don't have to wait very long for the next book........

This was as wonderful as I'd hoped. It also reminded me of Badjelly the Witch. I might be alone in that reckon - but it is a high compliment.

Dissapointed! I greatly enjoyed the Golden Compass series and was excited to hear of this new series. I found it quite slow and was not drawn in to the characters. I felt like I was missing something, as if there was some pre-reading required (above and beyond the Golden Compass).

It was lovely to have another chance to visit the universe Pullman built in The Golden Compass! The story and characters were just as rich and intricate as in the original books, and we got the chance to see a whole new side of Lyra's London. The fantastical plot makes heavy use of folklore and fairytales, but even at it's most surreal, the book is still grounded by the sensible and brave young children at the heart of the story.

Prequel to 'His Dark Materials'. We meet Lyra as a baby, learn some of her back story and that of her parents, some favourite characters from the original trilogy also put in an appearance.
With the introduction of new young characters, this is promising to be as good as the original series, can't wait for the next book
