AWhen Marcus Didius Falco, a Roman "informer "who has a nose for trouble that's sharper than most, encounters Sosia Camillina in the Forum, he senses immediately all is not right with the pretty girl. She confesses to him that she is fleeing for her life, and Falco makes the rash decision to rescue her--a decision he will come to regret. For Sosia bears a heavy burden: as heavy as a pile of stolen Imperial ingots, in fact. Matters just get more complicated when Falco meets Helena Justina, a Senator's daughter who is connected to the very same traitors he has sworn to expose. Soon Falco finds himself swept from the perilous back alleys of Ancient Rome to the silver mines of distant Britain--and up against a cabal of traitors with blood on their hands and no compunction whatsoever to do away with a snooping plebe like Falco. The Silver Pigs.

I really enjoy Lindsey Davis's writing about the Roman Empire and after reading all the recent ones about Flavia Alba and her father Marcus Didius Falco , I have gone back to the beginning. Ticking them off my bucket list with relish. Wit, dry humour,a deepening mystery, a great insight into the class structure of Ancient Rome and a love story along the way. That The Silver Pigs, which was originally published in 1989, is still in print and available in other formats too says it all really.

First in the historical fiction series more about day to day life and the struggles of the average Roman.

Don't be put off due to the time period. She breaks you in gently, with a rapid plot that sucks you in. This book is hard to put down, and before you know it you're at the library taking out the next in the series!!

Delightful, wonderful, funny introduction to one of the best murder mystery series ever.

Be sure to read the series in order, if you decide to tackle it.

The characters are memorable, the plots convoluted, the setting vividly brought to life, without ever seeming to make a big deal about the historical context.

It all just flows effortlessly, amusingly, suspensefully.....
