Christmas is special for psychic Nan Killian, medium Sarah Lyon-White and their ward Suki. It is special for their friends, Doctor John Watson, and his wife Mary, both Elemental Masters, who have found great delight in the season seeing it through young Suki's eyes. But Christmas Eve is also hallowed to dark forces, powers older than mankind, powers that come awake on this, the Longest Night. Women disappear in the dark of night, women only missed by those of their own kind. When they start to reappear, they are no longer sane. When the shadows reach for girls of good, can they stop the darkness before it can conquer all?
While enjoying the Christmas season, Nan and Sarah, along with Dr. Watson and his wife Mary, are called to investigate when missing women reappear and their experiences while gone have driven them mad.

I enjoy the Elemental Masters as a chance to do some light but enjoyable reading by this author. While not on par with her High Fantasy set in Valdemar, it does tic off the boxes for magic, fantasy and historical fiction as it takes place in the late 1800's in England. This story continues the timeline of Nan And Sarah who have magical abilities and familiars that make them valuable adjunct members of the White Lodge. Throw in a bit of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, along with a school for newly identified kids of magic and stir in a bit of The Oldest, Old One and some Hobs and you have the makings of a fanciful tale. It isn't deep, but it is a nice addition to the Elemental Masters Series.
