The watercolor illustrations are as beautiful to consider as the narrative. Florette is a picture book to just linger over the pages; you’ll have to do so on a second pass, because Mae and her conflict make for compelling figures. The urban color palette serves as a quiet backdrop for the vibrant tones of life when greenery does appear. FLORETTE not only satisfies and delights Mae’s searching eyes, but also that of the reader/listener. We realize we are as hungry for the sight of “the forest” as Mae was. And not just Mae, but the neighborhood children.

On a single page where we read “for a plant to grow.” Mae holds her newly planted sprout up between her and the neighborhood girl we saw on the bridge and the composition translates into the growth of a friendship. Mae has spent the book looking for a garden and as she finds it you come to understand what gardens can mean…a new and sustainable life in the city. Mae has found things to grow and nurture.

Anna Walker’s Florette hums and rustles with life. It’s a gorgeous book that warms and inspires. An absolute must—full stop; but especially for those who want to nurture a love of nature in themselves and the young(er).
