"It's the hottest day of the year, hotter than broccoli soup, hotter than the Atacama Desert, hotter than the surface of the sun. It's just the right kind of day for a boy and his grandad to go for a picnic. But as the sun beats down, Grandad keeps having to stop for a rest, and by the time they find the perfect picnic spot, some pirates have beaten them to it. Good job they have enough food to share!"--From the publisher.

The least formulaic of Sam Usher's "Seasons with Granddad" series, this book actually begins with the kid and grandfather going on their adventure, pausing after a little while to rest from trekking in the sun. Like all his book's, though, everything ends with a grant, unbelievable adventure that has the boy asking for another sunny day.

I love the adventures these two go on! Their summer struggle through the sweltering desert is no exception to the fun they have together.
