In early 1968, the Apollo program was on shaky footing. President Kennedy's end-of-decade deadline to put a man on the Moon was in jeopardy, and the Soviets were threatening to pull ahead in the space race. By August 1968, with its back against the wall, NASA decided to scrap its usual methodical approach and shoot for the heavens. With just four months to prepare, a fraction of the normal time, the agency would send the first men in history to the Moon. In a year of historic violence and discord, the Tet offensive, the assassinations of MLK and RFK, the Chicago DNC riots, the Apollo 8 mission was the boldest test of what America could do. With a focus on astronauts Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and Bill Anders, and their wives and children, this is a vivid, gripping, narrative that shows anew the epic danger involved, and the singular bravery it took, for man to leave Earth for the first time, and to arrive at a new world.

This book had everything. Kurson was able to bring the technical information about this space project and weave it in with the drama, all the people involved, had experienced. He did it masterfully in a way that kept me interested and able to follow easily. I'm so glad I read this book. I was thirteen when Apollo 8 was happening and I do remember a lot about it. The bravery was unimaginable that these men and their families endured, and gave me pause. Kurson also included many of the other events that were occurring during this tumultuous year in the history of this country. I found myself crying at parts; the war, the assassinations. It was eye opening and heart wrenching. This is definitely worthy of A Novel Idea put on by the Deschutes Public Library.

1968: a year that changed America. The thrilling conclusion to that year is the story of this book: Rocket Men, the story of Apollo 8, the first NASA flight to the moon. This book chronicles the impact of Apollo 8 on the astronauts; on their families; and on America. Incredibly well researched, very detailed, very honest, very moving.

I am trying to renew Rocket Men online but it does not appear to allow this. We have extreme inclement weather conditions, and I note you are closed today, and this book is due today. How do I proceed to renew this book. It appears my request is "in progress". Thank you.

Kurson tells the complete story well, and it is a story we don't know well enough. It is a story of the courage to accelerate the mission, the story of the technology, the (brief) story of the three astronauts, and the story of America in turmoil throughout the year 1968 until this historic lift-off.

Well written account of what is arguably (and the book argues) the most important Apollo mission.

Great book on part of the Apollo Program not often recognized for its contribution to the Space Race. Quite a bit of info I hadn't heard before. Easy read, perhaps 1/4 too long for the story told.

Excellent recap of the historic Apollo 8 mission. Found out some new info on all 3 astronauts.
The flight ended a very bad year ,1968, on a high & promising note.
