When Tony Lip, a bouncer from an Italian-American neighborhood in the Bronx, is hired to drive Dr. Don Shirley, a world-class Black pianist, on a concert tour from Manhattan to the Deep South, they must rely on a book to guide them to the few establishments that were then safe for African-Americans. Confronted with racism, danger, as well as unexpected humanity and humor, they are forced to set aside differences to survive and thrive on the journey of a lifetime.

A working-class Italian-American bouncer becomes the driver of an African-American classical pianist on a tour of venues through the 1960s American South.

Mahershala Ali plays a jazz musician who confronts the racism of his driver, played by Viggo Mortensen, in a warm but tentative real-life story. Full review

Mortensen and Ali both give fabulous performances in this feel-good road-trip drama that's part buddy comedy, part history lesson, and part social commentary on friendship and race. Full review

A supremely likeable film. Its message might seem obvious and its template overcooked, but it boasts a warm heart, with two astoundingly good lead performances to guide it home. Full review

A decent-enough flick, but truly a wasted opportunity in film making. It's like it was made in 1948. Have some issues with the "white savior" mentality of the film, too.

This is truly a great movie. Everything about it is wonderful-the acting, the writing, directing, sets, etc. If you don’t know about Don Shirley, I suggest a quick read on Wikipedia - it will verify that most of what this movie has in it is true. Be sure to watch the bonus sections - one of the writers was the son of “Lip” and his comments are fascinating to hear. There is a lot of humor, but a lot of really touching moments too. Don’t miss this one!

This film definitely deserved Best Picture in my opinion! Both Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali gave phenomenal performances. Even the score helped to make moments more emotional. This is definitely a must see film!

This was a great film, especially the last 30 minutes. Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali both tend to select films with a message, often not to large audiences. It was good to see them reach a larger audience.

Great movie telling it like it was. I think it deserved any an all awards it received.

I know that this movie has gotten a lot of push back for being racially tone-deaf, flattening the history, and romanticizing the era. I agree, but I still found it hard not to love this movie. Perhaps that's one of it's flaws.

This quote (in IMDb) turns the direction of the film to be an inspirational comedy:

Tony Lip: You know, when you first hired me, my wife went out and bought one of your records. The one about the orphans?

Dr. Don Shirley: Orphans?

Tony Lip: Yeah. Cover had a bunch of kids sittin' around a campfire?

Dr. Don Shirley: Orpheus.

Tony Lip: ...Yeah.

Dr. Don Shirley: Orpheus in the Underworld. It's based on a French opera. And those weren't children on the cover, those were demons in the bowels of Hell.

Tony Lip: No shxt! They must've been naughty kids!
