I enjoyed this reimagining of Welsh folklore. I loved how self-sufficient the heroine was.

An atmospheric horror fantasy set in a small, remote village on the edge of a dark, haunted forest. For all its familiar ingredients, this feels fresh and original, owing largely to its particular take on the undead and its focus on its two strong protagonists. It is the characters who make the story, with much of the emotion coming from their relationships with the dead. The imagery is evocative and tangible, and bonus points for being a fully self-contained stand-alone. I really enjoyed it.

Didn't read that far because I wasn't too taken with the writing style (under-developed ) or the plot.

Welsh folklore, zombies or bone houses, a well yielded ax by a strong female gravedigger, a ridiculously loyal goat, a chronic pain sufferer (representation done right), and mystery abounds! This book is full of so much heart, tons of bone house battles, and an adventure to save a family and their town. You will fall in love with the creepy vibe and characters who aren't afraid to fight death if means a chance to live!

A dark & bewitching tale about a gravedigger striving to save her family against not only financial ruin by a dastardly local, but also from the mysterious "bone houses" that are coming out of the woods. It reads kind of like a zombie fairy tale and is for fans of Holly Black.

The village of Colbren is surrounded by forests and mountains, rumored to be the home of the Fae before they left. In Colbren, Ryn works as the gravedigger, following her father's footsteps after his disappearance, to support her siblings. Soon, the dead begin to rise again, dubbed bone houses, and attack the village. The wakening of the undead coincides with the arrival of Ellis, the surname-less mapmaker. As the fight for survival becomes desperate against the bone houses, Ryn and Ellis trek into the mountains to seek a solution, following the myths of a cauldron of rebirth.

I liked that fact that the author uses a myth as the basis for this story's plot. This forces Ryn and Ellis to embark on an adventure to save the village. The way the author describes Ryn's siblings make you want to care for them and support them. This is a story about family and what you would do to keep your loved ones safe.
