"Beth, Portia, and Eddie Morgan haven't all been together in years. And for very good reasons—we'll get to those later. But when their wealthy grandfather dies and leaves a cryptic final message in his wake, the siblings and their respective partners must come together for a cross-country road trip to fulfill his final wish and—more importantly—secure their inheritance. But time with your family can be tough. It is for everyone. It's even harder when you're all keeping secrets and trying to forget a memory, a missing person, an act of revenge, the man in the black truck who won't stop following your car—and especially when at least one of you is a killer and there's a body in the trunk. Just to name a few reasons. But money is a powerful motivator. It is for everyone." -- Amazon.

As soon as I saw Samantha Downing had a new book coming out I ordered it. I totally enjoyed My Lovely Wife and couldn't wait for another fun read. That's not to say that someone dying or being killed is fun. It's Downing's writing, her way of putting it that gives you a chuckle along the way.

He Started It was a good read until the end. A family road trip with siblings and their spouses opens the door for some entertaining scenes, even if the plan is to scatter their grandfather's ashes at the end of the trip. Adding to the entertainment factor is that they are recreating a trip they took with their grandfather some 20 years earlier. The beginning reads like a poignant yet with elements of fun, family outing. But human nature being humane nature, old family squabbles begin to surface as well as new ones. Spouses begin to see the truth of their chosen life partners and the reality of certain family issues become hard to ignore. While those aspects could make it seem like the story was going south, it isn't mainly because of Downing's writing voice. She draws you in so you feel like you are there. There are a couple of lulls where you do think "can we get on with it?"

The reason this is a 3 star instead of a 5 is the ending. It was like Downing didn't know which way she wanted to go with it so just dumped it on the reader. It was a total let down and left the story with an unsatisfied ending. Downing could have done better.

Oh my gosh! What did I just read? What a bunch of screwed up, unlikeable characters. And they are self admittedly “a family of @s$holes and you can blame that on Grandpa, he started it.” But like the train wreck you can’t look away from, they drew me in chapter after chapter. Beth, the narrator, is entertaining with her snarky commentary as her and her siblings recreate the road trip from hell their Grandpa forced them to go on when they were kids. Nothing is as it seems in this book so buckle up and prepare for a bumpy ride.

Awesome book. Unexpected ending!

Want to take a cross-country road trip with your dysfunctional siblings and a couple of spare spouses? Oh, and you will be taking Grandpa's ashes to their final resting place while replicating a disastrous trip from twenty years ago. Grandpa's will says if you follow all the rules, you all get a piece of his multi-million dollar estate. If the many required stops at kitschy museums and bad motels don't take you to crazy town, then it is possible you are already there. Beth is our bad girl narrator and her family is a hot mess. Filled with unexpected slices of Americana and miles of family togetherness, the cover of this book sets the tone. Never forget that HE started it . . .

I must say that I was cruising along, reading this book and really loving it, so much so that I was very seriously considering 5 stars for it ...

And then the ending happened.

I feel a little gypped. So much so that I reread some of the last few pages to see if I had missed something. Nope. I hadn't.

Nevertheless, I still recommend this one. This story is compelling and engaging and of course one hell of a road trip. I can't wait to see the hype about it and to talk about it with people after publication. I can't help wondering if it were to be made into a movie or a TV series if the ending would be slightly changed??

Read it for yourself. You'll have opinions.

Nevertheless, I'm a fan of Samantha Downing. If you enjoyed My Lovely Wife, you'll probably like this one too. She writes horrible stories about horrible people, and I love practically every moment.
