A New & Noteworthy staff pick 2020. Fourteen years ago Emmie Blue released a balloon with her email address and a note telling her deepest secret. Now she sits at a table with the boy who found that balloon and he is about to ask her a question. She will say yes, but it’s not the question she was hoping for.

Thank you to Lia Louis for giving us back the joy that a red balloon can bring. Sixteen-year-old Emmie Blue releases a balloon from England with a note and gets and email from a boy named Lucas who lives in France. They establish a bond over the balloon and a shared birthday. As the book begins they are celebrating their 30th birthdays and Lucas has a big request for Emmie. He wants her to be the "best woman" for his wedding. Emmie had been hoping for a marriage proposal. Using past flashbacks along with the wedding plans, the narrative tells the story of Emmie Blue. You will root for her and weep with her as it seems like she struggles to hang onto at least one special someone in her life. Hand this to fans of Josie Silver and Beth O'Leary.
