This novel reads like a memoir, taking us back to "la belle epoque" in Paris, through the misery of the two great wars of our century, and into the struggle for daily existence in Communist Russia in the sixties and seventies. A young boy's haunting memories of his summers spent on the edge of the Russian steppes with his French grandmother are eloquently woven through her tales of the past. The winner of two prestigious French awards: Prix Goncourt and Prix Medicis.
