Good - Swing Vote (2008) 120 min. This is a political “fairy tale” about one man deciding who the next American president will be. I’m not sure if this political rarity is even possible. Despite the questionable reality of the pretence of this film, the film has really nothing to do with answering platform issues and who the best man for the presidency is. It’s about a little girl’s relationship with her dad. If you keep your focus on this aspect of the story, the film works very well. Kevin Costner is wonderful as the father, who seems to have given up on everything including his little girl played affectionately by Madeline Carroll. Costner really had to “dumb down” for this role which may not be very attractive to the ladies. I wonder what the producers of this picture were thinking when they hired both Kelsie Grammar and Dennis Hopper to play the presidential candidates (especially Dennis Hopper; he’s just scary). Again, this is a fairy tale and the election coverage is not intended to be the main story. Finally, the film does end abruptly and may leave you wanting more.
