I've read a lot of books that try to combine magic and the Regency era of English history, some with very impressive pedigrees, but this collection of two YA novels is only one that has ever impressed me. There's tremendous energy and fun in the author's use of "thieves' cant," an old-fashioned type of slang, and both the fiercely determined, very poor young lead and the magician who mentors her are deeply lovable characters. The lead grows to be believable older in the second book, and the romance is so subtle but well-executed that you can't help enjoy reading between the lines.
