As you can see from the start/finish dates, this one took me a while to read. Some of that was because I was busy with other things, like a family vacation. (Every time, I take a big bag of books and get no time to read.) But honestly, the main reason it took me so long was that I just wasn't that interested in the book. Meggie (who names their child Meggie?) is a whiny girl; her father is pretty darned ineffectual; Elinor is a completely clueless, rich book-bully. Dustfinger could have been so much more - a tragic figure. Most of the villains are from central casting; Basta (Enough!) and Mortola were more fun than the central villain, Capricorn. (Mortola, it turns out, is Capricorn's mother, but that information is, apparently, irrelevant.) The best parts of the book are the ones about books - Mo repairing books, Elinor collecting books (even though she won't let Meggie touch them), Meggie reading books, Fenoglio writing them. Endpapers, and dust covers, and illustrations... As a book lover, it warmed my heart to read a book about the love of books. I just wish it had been done a little better.
