An excellent read! When I started I was afraid this would be a story written to advance a political/social agenda without the plot and character development to allow the novel to stand on its own merits. I was wrong. It's well written, has very human characters and a compelling plot. It does shed light on issues faced by both legal Hispanic residents and illegal immigrants in the U.S. No sugar-coating, no rose-colored glasses, no identifiable political perspective. Just some insight into what life is like, good and bad, for a segment of the population most of us know nothing about firsthand. All this wrapped up in a good mystery with a likable detective who is good at his job and doing his best to be a decent human being in the face of day to day struggles in his work, family and personal life of the sort readers can relate to. I'm looking forward to the next novel featuring detective Jimmy Vega.
