Bob Dylan

All the Songs : the Story Behind Every Track

Only a true fan would pick up this nearly 700 page doorstop. There are lots of pictures, but surprisingly no album cover photos, as far as I noted. I borrowed it because I had not yet gotten a handle on the last ten or so albums of Dylan. Sure the songs were well played and well sung, but was there something extraordinary about them. It was good to get the overview, but there were a bit too many facts on the recordings and not enough on Dylan. We knew the mike that that he used, and the guitar and the producer and the harmonica, but little about what he was going through, apart from the break-up with Sara. A lot was said about his sources but little about his intent. Many, many biblical references were noted, some of which were far-fetched, but in other cases, well-established references were mixed-up completely. In the end, it was a pile of facts - some right, some wrong - thrown together a little too quickly. I guess that it is difficult to think clearly for 700 pages. Herman Melville, where are you?
