I have enjoyed this series, and I think the books have become more interesting as the series proceeds. This is one of the best ones so far. I really enjoy the ongoing characters, and I love the parallels between today and the Victorian era of these books. The Victorian era was also a time of great technological change and disruption, as the former village-centered agrarian economy became more urban and industrial. Charles Lenox's old school friend who was such a misfit in school has become a famous scientist, and opinions about the value of science (and belief in science) vary greatly. In Parliament there are ongoing arguments between those who think regulations are essential for health and safety, while others argue that the regulations are too great a burden on industry and will cut into profits. Sound familiar? There are also many small insights into common sayings, like "by hook or by crook." When the series started, I thought the writing was amateurish, but either it has improved or I have come to appreciate its human touch. Reading these books is a pleasure; I feel like I am visiting with old friends.
