DPL ADULTS: Juneteenth

Updated June 2022 While the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect in 1863, it was not implemented in Confederate controlled territories. Thus enslaved people in the Confederate state of Texas were not freed until years later. On June 19th, 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas, and freed the state's enslaved people. Thus, June 19th became known as Juneteenth, marking the country's second independence day.
