DPL ADULTS: Banned Books Week 2026

Let Books Be. Protect the Freedom to Read. October 4-10 2026 is Banned Books Week. This list begins with the 11 most challenged books of 2025, followed by some of the most historically challenged and banned books. (From the ALA's Office of Intellectual Freedom.) Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community — librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular. Created September 2026. First 11 books listed by number of challenges.
