After the loss of her mother, eleven-year-old Adara and her father move from California to Michigan to live with Adara's grandmother. Adara struggles to express her grief to the people around her and turns to plants instead. Her mother was a "plant whisperer" but Adara finds it hard to care for her mother's plants. Then she acquires a little succulent she names Perle and it unlocks the same magical ability her mother had--Adara can talk to plants and plants talk to her. With Perle's help, Adara finally finds a way to process her grief.
